An after cooler is a mechanical type heat exchanger designed to remove the heat produced by compressor, thus reducing the temperature of the compressed air so that it can be used in downstream equipments.
Irrespective of the type of compressor being used, the compressed air coming out from that compressor is bound to be hot. High-temperature air has adverse effect in most downstream instruments as it reduces effect of equipment lubrication and sealing materials. This hot air also contains large quantities of moisture vapour which, as it condenses, produce liquid and leads to rust, scale build-up.
The two most regularly used types of after coolers are air cooled type and water cooled type.
